VIEWPOINT 2024: Joseph Fjelstad, Founder, Verdant Electronics
Selected as a semifinalist in the Defense Business Accelerator program (DBX), the Occam concept is beginning to take hold as more in the defense community realize that a new approach is necessary to solve the many reliability problems inherent with current methodologies. Several new patents were filed to provide “training wheels" to remove much of the trepidation that has persisted since Occam's introduction… how to best build an Occam "component board" before subsequently "circuitizing" it. This new approach will remove (or at least significantly mitigate) the FUD factors that have kept many otherwise supportive followers at bay. The Occam Group was formed in 2023, with PCB Industry maven Ray Rasmussen serving as managing director. Its mission is to reinvigorate the effort to carry the Occam concept over the last hurdle to greater acceptance. The company has identified and aligned with manufacturing partner companies having the desire to realize and demonstrate the viability of the Occam concept with an announcement forthcoming in early 2024. The Occam concept has already been embraced by several US companies along with an EU funded project headed by Bucharest Polytechnic University joined by electronic product companies in Romania and Spain.
