Industry leaders have differing opinions on when chip shortages will abate, but one thing is certain: the semiconductor manufacturing industry is forever changed. In 2023, manufacturers will continue to shift from "just in time" to "just in case" manufacturing as they operationalize lessons from the past few years. Expect the unexpected in the year to come — namely, unpredictable hiccups as countries worldwide endeavor to onshore production in an industry with an innately global supply chain during volatile geopolitical times.

Capacity will remain tight at mature nodes with shortages of both chips produced on these nodes and the equipment required to produce these chips. These shortages are not an anomaly but a function of increased demand – a curve that is nowhere near flattening.

The digitization of the automotive industry was particularly notable during the chip shortages of the past couple years. However, demand for semiconductors is increasing across industries as more and more devices in our daily lives become computers, and those computers become smarter.

As older equipment required to produce less complex but more universal chips remains scarce, manufacturers will increasingly turn to the resale market and fab-to-fab equipment sourcing to diversify their supply chain strategies in 2023.
