It is paradoxical that 2021 has been the most difficult for so many of us while at the same time, one of the most rewarding. We battled first and foremost the COVID pandemic and continued to adapt to the necessity to isolate and work from home. But then we have also been rewarded with one of the most successful years from a business point of view.

During this pandemic, the electronics industry has seen enormous growth driven by the forced changes in human behavior to work predominantly from home as well as depend on electronics for personal entertainment. The increased demand for enhanced internet bandwidth, higher performing computers, tablets, and mobile phones, and all the accessories like monitors, chargers, etc., has driven the need for electronics manufacturing equipment.

In parallel, the growing adoption of new technologies such as 5G, electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles, and the Internet of Things (IOT), has put more pressure on companies assembling such products, especially the OEM companies and their contract manufacturers, creating a perfect storm for worldwide suppliers of such products.

As we transition into 2022, the challenges of functioning in a global pandemic with on-going supply chain and labor shortages will continue to impact the ability to deliver equipment to manufacture of all kinds of electronics products across all industries, while the demand keeps increasing. Many assembly companies cannot get the electrical components they require, unless they have a powerful OEM behind them, helping to secure parts.

We in the electronics manufacturing industry can see several record years ahead of us, so it is imperative for everyone along this complicated value chain to manage this growth. We also must manage the expectations of suppliers, customers, and employees in a collaborative and responsible manner.

We hope 2022 will allow us to move more freely and be able to meet with our colleagues and customers face to face. Although Zoom, Teams, and other tools have become familiar, being able to have that handshake and see a smile enables us to make stronger partnerships needed to grow our industry as a whole.
