Training programs throughout the semiconductor and electronics industries were severely disrupted by the Covid pandemic. Many companies are just now beginning to grapple with how to provide training in this new environment.

It appears, based on our customer's actions, that a significant part of training will remain online, or virtual, for the foreseeable future. However, there are a few companies now considering re-introducing in-person training. While virtual training can be lower cost and more flexible, in-person training allows for more interaction between the instructor and the participants.

There also appears to be a significant backlog of training needs that have built up during the pandemic, so 2023 is looking like a strong year for training activities, even though sales and profitability in the semiconductor complex will likely be down for the year. The CHIPs Act in the United States will begin to provide a tailwind for training, but that is not likely to happen until 2024 and beyond.

Overall, the movement toward more US-centric manufacturing, more resilient supply lines, and more focus on the workforce due to the lack of available talent, should create a multi-year boom for training. At Semitracks, we are prepared to provide the appropriate mix of in-person and virtual training to help meet the needs of companies in this challenging environment for workforce development.
