Optomec to Showcase Aerosol Jet System For Photovoltaics/Printed Electronics at Intersolar/SEMICON West
Aerosol Jet Systems will be featured in Intersolar Area Booth # 8363, July 14 – 16th 2009
Albuquerque, New Mexico: Optomec announced today that they will showcase the Aerosol Jet® Deposition system at Intersolar/SEMICON West at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California. Optomec’s Aerosol Jet system is a printed electronics solution that is used in the development and fabrication of next generation electronic devices such as high efficiency solar cells, flat panel displays, Flex Circuits, PCBs, embedded passives, semiconductor packaging, and even printed biologics. The functional electronics produced by the high resolution Aerosol Jet system can have line widths and pattern features ranging from less than 10 microns to more than one millimeter.
The Aerosol Jet system is able to deposit virtually any material onto any substrate. The low temperature process begins with aerosolizing an ink (including conductive materials such as gold, silver, platinum, palladium, etc., insulating materials, nanoparticle inks, biological matter and more). The aerosolized material is then focused through nozzles in a patented deposition head to form an aerodynamically focused droplet jet stream. The droplet stream is deposited at specific locations on a substrate through CAD/CAM control, which eliminates the time and cost of creating hard tooling such as photomasks, screens or stencils. This makes the Aerosol Jet system a cost-effective green-tech solution for printing conductive structures. The additive process employed by the Aerosol Jet system reduces environmental impact by minimizing the waste and chemicals that are part of more traditional subtractive manufacturing processes.
Recently, IDTechEX selected Aerosol Jet as the “Best New Manufacturing Technology for the Production of High Efficiency Solar Cells”. Aerosol Jet is able to print narrower collector lines than screen printing thereby reducing the shadowing effect and increasing cell efficiency. For embedded passives, the system’s tight volumetric control is well suited for direct printing of resistors without the need for laser trimming.
